Our Advocates can assist adults, seniors, disabled individuals, the unsheltered, and veterans with a wide variety of referrals specific to their needs. This can include employment assistance, medical insurance information, food resources, in-home care, along with rent and utility assistance. Of course, our Advocates will go above and beyond to help connect a resource to your unique needs!
Medical Insurance & Prescription Assistance
Finding medical insurance can be a challenge but our staff has the resources to assist you with applying for Medi-Cal or connecting you to knowledgeable organizations that can assist with applying for Medicare. If you are struggling to cover a prescription, reach out to us and see if we can connect you to our Prescription Assistance program, sponsored by Southwest Healthcare District.
Food Resources
Anyone in our community can schedule a food box pick up at our office. In addition to the food box, an Advocate can provide when available, a Market Gift Voucher for either Frazier Park Market or Pine Mountain Club General Store. We can also provide information on Commodities and Senior Sack (for seniors 60+). If eligible, Cal-Fresh applications are on hand and can be submitted the same day.
Veteran Assistance
For those who served and are looking to explore more resources, our Advocates can connect you with veteran-specific organizations in Kern County. Let us know what you are looking for, and we will connect you. Thanks to a small grant from the local VFW, we can also provide targeted support to veterans based on their current needs.
Employment and Unemployment Assistance
Our job board is updated as new opportunities arise in the community and surrounding areas. We can fax and email applications for our community members and assist with creating resumes, cover letters, and completing applications. For those needing to apply for unemployment, we have the applications here in our office and can fax them to EDD.
Unsheltered Services
For those in our community who are facing homelessness, our Advocates can connect you with an outreach team out of Bakersfield to get individuals, couples, or families into a shelter. These shelters focus on ending homelessness and connecting individuals to additional resources. We also have hygiene kits specific to the needs of those living without shelter.
Rent/Mortgage/Utility Assistance
When funding is available, our Advocates can help community members avoid homelessness by assisting with rent or mortgage assistance. In addition, those who struggle to cover their gas or electricity can apply for a $100 credit to their bill. Once that is exhausted, the client can apply for additional utility assistance through LiHEAP.
In-Home Support Services & Hospice Care
Our Advocates can help direct community members to services in our area specific to their health and care needs. If you are looking to become an IHSS caretaker or get a loved one extra care, you can call our Advocates to see if you are eligible and for guidance on what steps to take next.
Services for Individuals with Disabilities
Our staff has an array of referrals for those who are looking for services specific to a disability. In connection with the Independent Living Center of Kern, our Advocates can find the right assistance for each client. These services can include connecting the individual to medical baseline through their utility company or making updates to their home. The Kern County Home Access Grant Program allows for accessibility improvements to be made to the home of an eligible individual with a physical disability.
